Understanding Medicare Enrollment Plans

IEP / Initial Enrollment Period : Starts 3 months before you turn 65, includes your birth month, and ends 3 months after you turn 65.

AEP / Annual Enrollment Period: Occurs each year from 10/15 – 12/7. You can make any type of plan changes you want to. New plans will be effective January 1st of the next year.

OEP/Open Enrollment Period: People with Medicare Advantage Plans are able to switch Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare. 1/1 - 3/31 each year

SEP / Special Enrollment Periods: Special times when people can make changes to their plans outside of IEP, AEP, and OEP. Some of the reasons are: Moving into a new area, Disaster strikes where you live during the normal enrollment periods, you become Medicaid eligible, become institutionalized or move into a Nursing Home, get on a State Prescription assistance program.

A form called a Scope of Appointment form must be filled out 48 hours ahead of a scheduled appointment in order to discuss Medicare Advantage Plans or Prescription Drug plans with a potential Client.

  • If you are in the final four days of an election period, you’re allowed to have a same-day SOA.
  • If you initiate the contact by calling your agent or visiting their office, the 48-hour rule doesn’t apply, but you still need to complete the SOA.
  • Walk-ins or unplanned meetings are exempt from the 48-hour waiting period.
